NOTES ON JUDO GRADINGS

Students are tested in FOUR different sections, which are:

1. TECHNIQUE:- This is the demonstration of some of the standing techniques or groundwork moves they have learnt. For higher grades this includes counter-moves, methods of attack and defence in both standing and groundwork.

2. APPLICATION OF TECHNIQUE:- This section includes methods of gripping the Judogi, moving on the mat, attack and defence postures. For higher grades it includes methods of breaking balance and how to break down an opponents defences in groundwork.

3. SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE

4. TERMINOLOGY:- These are self-explanatory and can be tested with a short theory slip-test. You will have the learning sheets you need for these sections well before grading day.

You will never be asked to do anything you have not learned in the normal course of your judo lessons Novices and lower grades will make some mistakes, if you know you have made an obvious error, just say “Sorry sensei, may I try again”. Progressing up the judo ‘ladder’ is very much like running a race (slowly!), everyone who keeps going can get to the winning line, some of us just take a little longer. I have every confidence in the abilities of all my students, so BEST OF LUCK!
